Carriage Bell

Home / The works

The works

A ground floor at 14 Wren Lane with four rooms, one bench, a ribbon works out back, and shelves that used to be the mill's window stock.

Room one

The bench

Where everything is opened, photographed, and told the truth. Two chairs, one lamp, a bell that gets tested last.

Room two

The museum shelves

Forty machines that taught the valley to type. Glass came from the mill. Touch nothing; type anything on Tuesdays.

Room three

The stock room

Machines mid-restoration, each tagged with its date of arrival and its date of return. Nothing here is forgotten.

Out back

The ribbon works

The 1951 winder, the ink vats, the smell of wax and cedar. Tours on the hour, free, ask anyone in an apron.

"I quit the mill for the sound a bell makes. Everything after that was carpentry."
— Oren Vask, 1962, carved over the door
